Karla Caves, Lonavala

#2 of 29 in Nature in Pune District
Cave · Nature / Park
Marvel at the astonishing Buddhist cave shrines built into the rocky hillside at Karla Caves. Head inside the shrines, constructed between the 2nd century BCE and 5th century CE, to discover inscriptions, art, and stupas (dome-shaped structure used as shrines). Witness incredible examples of ancient Buddhist architecture and culture displayed within the caves. The complex contains a Buddhist monastery, which once had two 15 m (49 ft) long pillars, of which only one now remains. Inside the main cave, discover a huge 45 m (148 ft) long and 14 m (46 ft) high "chaitya" hall, carved from stone and one of the largest of its kind in India. Regular maintenance work often causes parts of the protected monument to close to the public. • It is a great place to visit. It is at good height so be careful while going up or coming down with your vehicle. Also be careful while climbing up the steps as some are really stiffs. Do take the 25 rupees entry ticket to visit the cave. The tickets is not mandatory but without that you can not enter the cave areas. This shows great work of our Indian ancestors. Also go to the temple that also have great stone works. In The main cave do not put step on the central construction ( gambuz). You can get light food and soft drinks over here. The Public Toilet is near the parking area. There is one person who makes handmade cycles toys using wires and springs. Good stylish stones are also available for sale. But do not put those stones in your aquarium as it is poisonous for fishes.
  • This is wonderful place for tracking as well as fun lovers. You have options to tracking and also provision to reach half of the journey by vehicle. Plenty of shops are there on the way to get some fun and shipping. However pricing is bit high. There is charges for vehicle rs30 and Karla cave rs 25 for each. Cave is having 2 parts, 1st part seems like used as jail and 2nd part may be kind of store. Overall, I feel it's nice place and you can enjoy the track.
