KGB Building, Riga

4.3
#2 of 107 in Museums in Latvia
Specialty Museum · Museum
KGB Building keeps dark secrets of interrogations, torture, and the executions of thousands. Set foot in the dark hallways of the former secret police headquarters, or "the house on the corner," as the locals called it between 1940 and 1991 during Soviet rule. Visit a stark prison cell, outfitted with only a pallet to sleep on and a window that lets in a small ray of light. Personal effects that prisoners took with them on a journey without return, such as a teddy bear or a bit sand from their spouse's grave, make the exhibits hauntingly real. Keep in mind that, while you can access part of the museum on your own, you'll need to join a tour to see others. Check the website in advance for English-language tour times. • It is not too interesting to visit it without planning ahead as for free you can only see the top level zone. Definitely book a guide ahead!  more »

  • I am really happy with the experience there. It's so much more than I expected. You can really get a sense of history and my friend liked the experience too. There were no other people as well (I visited shortly before the lockdown of museums happened). Def a recommendation if you are at all interested in Soviet history.
  • Pretty uninteresting at least the free portion. It consists mainly of random pictures and sad stories on pealing walls. These museums of occupation in general in Latvia are counter-productive and hold this country back. Both perpetrators and victims are long gone by now. Its time to let it go and move forward.
