Built on a large scale by a king needing to impress and rebuild after defeat in battle, Mandalay deserves exploration.
Get a sense of the local culture at Golden Palace Monastery (Shwenandaw Kyaung) and Mingun Pahtodawgyi. Take a break from Mandalay with a short trip to Ayeyarwaddy River in Mingun, about 1h 15 min away. And it doesn't end there: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kuthodaw Pagoda & the World's Largest Book, admire the striking features of Pahtodawgyi Pagoda, take some stellar pictures from Mandalay Hill, and take in the views from U Bein Bridge.

Although Myanmar moved its capital to Naypyidaw in 2005, Yangon remains the largest city and commercial hub in the country.
Get a sense of the local culture at Shwedagon Pagoda and Botahtaung Pagoda. There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Chaukhtatgyi Buddha, browse the eclectic array of goods at Bogyoke Aung San Market, explore the different monuments and memorials at Taukkyan War Cemetery, and contemplate the waterfront views at Inya Lake.
