Gain insight into William Herschel's scientific and astronomic discoveries at Herschel Museum of Astronomy. The Georgian house was once the residence of Herschel and his wife Caroline in the 1700s, and today is dedicated to astronomy. In 1781, Herschel discovered the planet Uranus from his home; the first discovery of a planet since Ancient Greece--it expanded the known universe by two times. Walk through the house, which has preserved much of the original decor and furniture. Start on the ground floor, where you can see the brass replica of Herschel's reflecting telescope, from which he discovered the planet. As you go through the upper levels of the gallery, you will see many heirlooms, such as William's travel diary, Caroline's clothing, and the family's visitors book. • When you've done all the main sights of Bath, this makes a pleasant change. Interesting piece of history, nice little garden-and a chance to see inside one of those many Georgian terraces. A short film showing on a loop in the basement gives you all you need to understand the exhibits.
  • Interesting collection but poor presentation. Mirror and lens making could be explained more: principles techniques and instruments. Discovery of infrared marginally better presented, but could get better. Film w poor narration.
