Create an itinerary including House Of The Black Heads
Discover why House Of The Black Heads used to be called the "grandest adornment of Riga." You can see carvings, reliefs, and embedded statues on its facade, then head for the arched entrance flanked by a virgin and child, plus the patron saint himself. The city built this house in the 14th century as a meeting venue for different social organizations. In the 17th century, its sole occupants were the Brotherhood of Blackheads--a guild of unmarried German merchants. Nazi Germans and Soviets destroyed the building during and after World War II, but it was completely restored in 1999. Notice the portal engraving, which states, "Should you ever see me falling, raise me up, 'tis your calling." A visit to House Of The Black Heads represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Riga holiday planning app to plot your vacation.

  • A historical landmark of Riga, destroyed in the second world war, but nicely rebuilt. The story behind it is worth telling.

  • I highly recommend this unique place for a visit, but do get a guide. There are so many intricate stories that a guide can tell you and answer any questions you have. It's a visit to medieval times...

  • Lovely place! It's absolutely gorgeous place for receptions, concerts, and other events alike. Includes museum of the Black Heads Guild as well as different halls full of renessance art and furniture. Assisting staff welcoming and friendly. NB Possibility to enjoy the place with a glass of sparkling 😉
  • Definitely worths visiting if in Riga.. It's one of the ways to get to know better a part of city's and its people history. Also, if lucky, you can be enchanted with live piano songs in the ball room upstairs 😍
