KGB Building keeps dark secrets of interrogations, torture, and the executions of thousands. Set foot in the dark hallways of the former secret police headquarters, or "the house on the corner," as the locals called it between 1940 and 1991 during Soviet rule. Visit a stark prison cell, outfitted with only a pallet to sleep on and a window that lets in a small ray of light. Personal effects that prisoners took with them on a journey without return, such as a teddy bear or a bit sand from their spouse's grave, make the exhibits hauntingly real. Keep in mind that, while you can access part of the museum on your own, you'll need to join a tour to see others. Check the website in advance for English-language tour times. Towards the north of the city, this inconspicious building sits quietly as the local world goes by. Once inside, you instantly feel a step back in time with no modern conversions have been added...

Worth a visit! Definitely join a guide tour which is very interesting and worth it to really learn what has happened in this place. The guide was informative, answered all of our question and extended the tour to almost 90 minutes (as opposed to the planned 60) due to all the questions from the group. Well worth the time and money to the story about the occupation of Latvia by Russia. As war is currently taking place in nearby Ukraine, this place is a dark reminder of a time when the Latvian people were oppressed and that history often repeats itself. Definitely a must do while in Riga.
The perfect place to learn about Latvian occupation time with very shocking impressions and stories. One should definitely go on the guided tour. Especially thanks to our guide Daniela, it was an impressive experience.
