At Riga Town Hall Square, you can see symbols of Latvia's independence, such as the town hall and the statue of Roland. The statue of a Charlemagne's nephew--who was a fair judge and the defender of accused--welcomes guests from the middle of the square. Most of the medieval architecture was destroyed during World War II. On the northern side of the square, notice how the reconstructed town hall is topped with a Baroque tower and a postmodern roof. Look for the memorial plank on the spot where the city Christmas tree was lit in medieval times. The square also features the Blackheads House, the Latvian Occupation Museum, and the Sun Museum. • The square is where buskers play to tourists. I heard an operatic rendition of Ava Maria followed by a cello playing U2. It was great. There are lots of cafes and bars nearby and it’s a few minutes...

  • Cool public square with an even cooler town hall! They currently have these boards set up showing the devastation and proximity by different modes of transportation to various Ukrainian cities, which is pretty appropriate given the timing. I wish there was more green though, always good to have plants in a public square.
  • Well maintained square with the monument of first Christmas tree
