An imposing granite structure near Pretoria, Voortrekker Monument remains dedicated to the Dutch settlers of the Eastern Cape, whose emigration farther inland became known as the "Great Trek." Finished in 1949, the massive monument was designed by local architect Gerard Moerdijk, while its cornerstone was laid by descendants of Boers who led the migration. Admire the 40 m (130 ft) tall structure, adorned with statues of the Voortrekker leaders, or step inside to view a tapestry with several million stitches, relics from the trek, and the ornately decorated marble frieze. I normally go up the Monument for picnic and clearing my head. It very refreshing to walk in nature and watch animals. I always lose track of time when I am at the Monument.

I literally spent the whole day here, from 10am to 5pm. It was great. Grounds are well kept and lots to do and see. The monument itself is very well constructed and is architecturally beautiful. The artwork within is so detailed. The trek model of the routes in the garden was also well done but needed a bit of detail. All staff speak superb Afrikaans and the food was good.

A great monument for the Afrikaans people. We all in this country have a history and we should be proud of it. It surrounded by wonderful nature parks and is a great outing for families of all ethnic backgrounds. Celebrate history and learn from it. Would highly recommend for touris and people out of town to see it.
