5 days in Madurai, Rameswaram & Kanyakumari Itinerary

One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Madurai sits on the banks of the River Vaigai and serves as a center of Tamil culture.

Start off your visit on the 28th (Wed): see the interesting displays at Gandhi Memorial Museum and then examine the collection at Madurai Government Museum.

Ahmedabad to Madurai is an approximately 7-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Ahmedabad in February, plan for a bit warmer nights in Madurai, with lows around 25°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 1st (Thu) early enough to go by car to Rameswaram.

A trip to Rameswaram on Pamban Island will take you across a long limestone shoal bridge with spectacular ocean scenery.

Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Fri): snap pictures at Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Arulmigu Ramanatha Swamy Temple, then see the interesting displays at Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam House, and finally kick back and relax at Dhanushkodi Beach Point.

Getting from Madurai to Rameswaram by car takes about 3 hours. Other options: take a train. Finish your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Sat) so you can drive to Kanyakumari.

Located at the most southerly point of mainland India, Kanyakumari has long attracted pilgrims and those keen to see the end of the road.

Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Sat): make a trip to Vivekananda Rock Memorial, take in the spiritual surroundings of Bhagavathy Amman Temple, and then make a trip to Gandhi Memorial.

Traveling by bus from Rameswaram to Kanyakumari takes 5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus and taxi; or take a train. In March, daily temperatures in Kanyakumari can reach 38°C, while at night they dip to 29°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Sun) to allow time to fly back home.
