Create an itinerary including Castle Howard
Home to the Howard family for centuries, Castle Howard is included in the Treasure Houses of England heritage group. The domed central structure is recognizable as the fictional "Brideshead" from the 1981 television series. Almost all of the 145 rooms have been open to the public since 1952, with the exception of a wing that the Howard family still calls home. After touring the rooms, take a walking tour of the 51 hectare (127 acre) arboretum, called Kew, to see some of England's local tree varieties at their best. Tours of the arboretum are arranged separately from the castle tours, but the house's gardens are accessible with the castle admission. Look for a gazebo in the garden called the Temple of the Four Winds, or the mausoleum in the park--both are romantic resting spots. Stop by the visitor's center to arrange all your tickets for your tour. Plan a York trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • I’d been before so was just visiting the grounds with my dog. Gorgeous grounds and lovely for my pooch to run around (on a long lead). Slightly underwhelmed by how unfriendly it seemed. Appreciate...

  • Amazing place to visit. Highly recommended. Would definitely take friends and family here for the architectural experience and the history.

  • What a great day out! A tour around the castle proved really interesting and included an exhibition of films and TV shows set at the castle. A delicious lunch in the café and then a walk around the wonderful park, by the lake and through the woodland. Some great follies to investigate. The walled garden is stunning and peaceful. All in all, a great destination.
  • At £25 a head it is not a cheap day out although the gardens were very interesting and colourful. The house was good but would have been nicer to have seen more behind the scenes. Lunch in the cafe was tasty and not too expensive and the rest of the grounds meant you could easily pass a few hours.
